Initially, Physicians meeting constituted senior consultants and faculty of Bangalore Medical College discussing topics of interest and problem cases in the premises of Victoria Hospital over a cup of coffee under the effective facilitator Dr.A. Nagaraju. It soon expanded its scope to organizing monthly clinical meetings at different hospitals in Bangalore. Guest lectures were often arranged for the benefit of physicians. Many a times, senior physicians themselves foot in their contribution to conduct these programs. These meetings became the foundation of the presently functioning Association of Physicians of India (Karnataka Chapter). Since its inception, the association has focused promoting collaboration, enabling knowledge sharing, advancing treatment, practices and skills, and supporting academic endeavors among physicians in India – a vision API has consistently been meeting.

After the success of national conference of API in the year 1975, many physicians felt the need to start an association of Physicians, which could be a guiding force for doctors in the field over the years to come. Dr. K.S.S. Appashouldered the initiative and registered the association. Dr. N. T. Mohan became the Founder Secretary of the association.

The Karnataka chapter of API was registered in the year 1975. Since then, the association has served the profession in the academic as well as medical practicefield. Currently, API Karnataka is associated with 950 physicians, and the numbers steadily growing. Forty years in the life of an organization is a short period, but the milestones it has achieved is worthy of mention. API’s rise to success has been due to the untiring efforts of Dr. KSS Appa, who started the organization in 1975, and nurtured it to its present state, ably assisted by a number of stalwarts over time like Dr. M. Maiya, Dr. V Parameshvara, Dr. B.P. Gururaja Rao, Late Dr. T. B. Basavarajendra, Late Dr. N.T. Mohan, Dr. B. V. Rajapopal, Dr. C.D. Srinivasamurthy, Dr. T. Ramanatah, Dr. B.K. Srinivasamurthy, Late Dr. K. P. Ganeshan, Dr. B. M. Hegde, Dr. P.S. Shankar, Dr. H. B. Rajashekar, Dr. Muralidhara S. Rao, who were the office bearers of the organization.

Even though the Karnataka Chapter started in Bangalore, physicians from other parts of the state showed interest to become members of the association, thus creating a platform for a state-wide presence. At present, there are thirteen API chapters in the state of Karnataka.

Clinical meetings & CME programs have become a regular part of API’s activities in other parts of Karnataka. Every year, API, in association with Medical Education & Research Trust, conducts annual CME programme for seven days, in General Medicine, for the benefit of post graduate students. The event has become very popular among post graduates. Post graduates from different parts of the country are participating in the CME, as it is more examination oriented.

To encourage continued participation from other cities, API has made it mandatory to elect physicians from outside Bangalore as chairmen on alternate years.

Constitution of API was drafted for the first time by Dr. V Parmeshwara. Subsequently, this has been amended and rewritten periodically to stay ahead of the present time.

API’s journey began from a one-room office in IMA building. Due to the continued efforts of senior members office bearers , land was allotted by the government of Karnataka, in the year 1995. Today, the association can boast of having its own building API Bhavana, the first structure in India to be constructed by API from its own resources. It was inaugurated by then Chief Minister of Karnataka in the year 2003

The API Bhavana, is centrally air-conditioned and can accommodate 300-350 guests with good AV aids. A digital library and small conference rooms with a seating capacity of 80 to 90 guests are also a part of API Bhavana. Dr KSS Appa auditorium is utilized by many sister organizations for it’s academic activities.

API Karnataka regularly conducts workshops on curriculum for Post graduate studies in General Medicine. Since its pilot run, this workshop has been paving the way for effective practices and academic endeavours. The outcome of the 2002 workshop was submitted and adopted by RGUHS, Karnataka, and was implemented as the curriculum for the post graduates in General Medicine, in the year 2006.
